Mold Inspection
GOT MOLD? Your home or office could be making you sick. Several stories regarding mold have been publicized in the Charleston area recently. Instead of panicking we should take the presence of mold as a warning sign that a moisture problem exists and needs to be addressed immediately. Ignoring these signs will allow mold to develop further and potentially become a problem for the home or business.
The following are a few signs that a moisture problem may exist:
- A musty or mildew type smell detected when initially entering the home, closed bedroom or closed closet.
- Experiencing unexplained allergic symptoms within your family, which seem to continue for no apparent reason.
- Allergic symptoms that seem to get better when you are away from the home or office, but only return when you re-enter your home or place of work.
Quite often, these problems initially manifest themselves in the form of bacteria and not mold. In cases where standing water is present, bacteria forms before mold has the opportunity to develop. Usually, it is the bacteria present which affects people long before mold shows up.
What to do
You must find the cause before treating the problem! Most people needlessly spend money on duct cleaning or other remedies only to have the problem reappear because they did not treat the source of the problem. Finding the problem will give you the information you need to adequately remedy the situation so your money is not wasted on possible, but improbable solutions. There is a scientific explanation for the problem identified which can be evaluated by a Certified Indoor Environmental consultant (CIEC). Visual inspections can be conducted using advanced equipment such as an air particle counter, moisture meter, CO, CO2, humidity and temperature meter. Advanced inspections may even include the use of a thermal imaging camera to identify temperature changes or non-visible areas of moisture intrusion. Air or surface samples should only be taken to prove a suspected area identified by the above mentioned equipment is positive for mold or bacteria growth.
What not to do
Unfortunately, any number of companies can perform a visual inspection of your home or office and make needless recommendations without substantiating their comments or suggestions with the proper equipment listed above. Do not be swayed by your anxiety about mold to spend enormous amounts of money to try just any so called corrective actions or be pressured to make a quick uninformed decision.
